Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX and the richest man in the world, outlined the company’s ambitious vision during a visit to Starbase, Texas, on January 12, 2026. Speaking at the site of SpaceX’s massive rocket manufacturing facility, which the company built from scratch into a functioning city, Musk welcomed Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and senior Pentagon leadership for a tour focused on manufacturing scale and national security innovation. SpaceX, known for its reusable Falcon 9 rockets and Starship spacecraft, has transformed private spaceflight through rapid development and frequent launches.

Musk described the core purpose of SpaceX as turning science fiction into reality. He explained that the company aims to make the world of Star Trek tangible, including concepts like Starfleet Academy, so that what has long been imagined becomes scientific fact. “I’ll tell you a little bit just about the purpose of SpaceX,” Musk said. “It’s like we want to make Star Trek real. Okay. We want to make Starfleet Academy real so that it’s not always science fiction, but one day the science fiction turns to science fact.”
He painted a picture of a future filled with large spaceships carrying people to the Moon, Mars, and eventually beyond the solar system. Musk emphasized exploration and discovery, envisioning epic futuristic vessels with crews traveling to uncharted places. “And we have spaceships going through space, big spaceships with people going to other planets, going to the moon, and ultimately going beyond our star system to other star systems where we may meet aliens or discover long dead alien civilizations,” he continued. “I don’t know. But we want to go and we want to see what’s happening and we want to have epic futuristic spaceships with lots of people in them traveling to places we’ve never been to before.”
Musk linked this expansive goal directly to public perceptions of space efforts, suggesting it aligns with broader ideas of human advancement in space. “Yeah, that’s the goal,” he said. “And that’s what I think the public thinks of when they think of Space Force.” His remarks highlighted how SpaceX’s work on Starship and ongoing rocket development serves as a stepping stone toward making interstellar travel and cosmic exploration an everyday reality rather than distant fantasy.
The event underscored SpaceX’s role in pushing the boundaries of technology at a time when government and private sectors are increasingly aligned on innovation. Musk’s comments reflected the company’s drive to accelerate humanity’s presence in space through reusable vehicles and large-scale manufacturing visible right along a public highway at Starbase. By framing the mission in such vivid, forward-looking terms, he reinforced SpaceX’s position at the forefront of turning ambitious dreams into operational achievements.
