President Trump Announces The Release Of Previously Classified UFO Files “In An Effort For Complete And Maximum Transparency”

President Donald Trump on May 8 announced the release of previously classified government files related to unidentified flying objects, unidentified aerial phenomena, and alleged extraterrestrial life, marking the latest effort by a U.S. administration to publicly disclose records tied to decades of UFO investigations and reports. The release included documents, videos, mission transcripts, and historical reports that the administration said were being made public to provide greater transparency surrounding long-debated government records.

In a post published on Truth Social, Trump said the Department of War had released “the first tranche of the UFO/UAP files to the Public for their review and study.” He described the move as part of an effort for “Complete and Maximum Transparency” and said his administration had directed agencies to identify and provide government files related to “Alien and Extraterrestrial Life, Unidentified Aerial Phenomena, and Unidentified Flying Objects.”

Trump also criticized previous administrations over the handling of UFO-related information, writing that earlier governments “failed to be transparent on this subject.” Referring to the newly released material, he added, “with these new Documents and Videos, the people can decide for themselves, ‘WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?’”

According to Reuters, President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth released dozens of previously classified files on Friday, with the Pentagon stating that additional materials are expected to be declassified and released in future batches as reviews continue. The Defense Department described the disclosures as part of what officials called an “unprecedented transparency” initiative surrounding unidentified anomalous phenomena, commonly referred to as UAPs.

The newly released records reportedly include historical documents dating back to the 1940s, including a 1947 report referencing “flying discs.” The archive also contains materials connected to NASA’s Apollo-era lunar missions, including a photograph described as showing “unidentified phenomena” captured from the moon’s surface during the Apollo 12 mission in 1969.

Another document drawing attention from researchers and space enthusiasts was a transcript from the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. According to the transcript, Apollo 17 command module pilot Ronald Evans described observing “a few very bright particles or fragments or something that go drifting by as we maneuver.” Mission control responded, “Roger. Understand,” according to the released files.

The release immediately generated discussion across the aerospace, technology, and scientific communities, particularly among researchers focused on government transparency and unidentified aerial phenomena. Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb told Reuters that the files demonstrated the government had collected and maintained records tied to unexplained sightings and events. “The files show that UAP are not simply a matter of speculation or public curiosity,” Loeb said. “The government has collected records.”

Loeb also noted that some of the imagery connected to the Apollo missions could potentially have conventional explanations, including asteroid impacts on the lunar surface. He added that more significant materials could still emerge in later disclosures as additional files undergo declassification review.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said in a statement that the records had “long fueled justified speculation” due to their classified status. “It’s time the American people see it for themselves,” he said, according to Reuters.

The release was also welcomed by several lawmakers who have previously advocated for greater disclosure surrounding UFO investigations. Representatives Tim Burchett and Anna Paulina Luna, both vocal supporters of declassifying UAP-related records, publicly supported the move. Luna said another tranche of materials was expected within approximately 30 days.

At the same time, some analysts and critics argued that many of the released files contained information that had already circulated in previous government disclosures. UAP investigator Mick West told Reuters that much of the material appeared similar to information disclosed during the Biden administration and said the files did not provide conclusive evidence of extraterrestrial life. West, who analyzes UAP footage using imaging and software tools, said many sightings could be explained by distant objects, lighting conditions, or camera-related visual effects.

The disclosures also renewed debate over government secrecy, classified aerospace research, and the public’s long-running fascination with possible extraterrestrial activity. UFO and UAP investigations have remained a recurring topic in Washington in recent years, with congressional hearings, military pilot testimonies, and Pentagon reports increasing mainstream attention on unexplained aerial sightings.

Trump’s Truth Social post concluded with a direct message to the public regarding the newly released material: “Have Fun and Enjoy!” The files were published through the government portal referenced in the announcement, with administration officials indicating that additional releases are expected as the broader declassification effort continues.
