First Lady Melania Trump urged students across the United States to approach artificial intelligence with curiosity and critical thinking during an AI literacy event held on January 16, 2026. Addressing thousands of participating schools through a partnership with Zoom Communications, the First Lady framed the moment as a turning point in how young people learn, create, and explore ideas, emphasizing both the opportunities and responsibilities that come with rapidly advancing technology.

Melania described the current technological moment as transformative. “We are living in the age of imagination,” she said, explaining that artificial intelligence has created a new environment in which questions and ideas can be explored almost instantly. “The Age of Imagination is a new era, powered by artificial intelligence, where one’s curiosity can be satisfied almost magically in seconds.” She said the tools made possible by AI give students the ability to pursue creative ambitions in ways that were previously unavailable. Whether designing fashion, producing films, creating music, or developing animated stories, Trump said young people now have the ability to begin building those projects from their own homes.
The First Lady stressed that curiosity remains the essential ingredient behind meaningful innovation. “History reminds us that curiosity is the driving force behind every great achievement,” she said, noting that the world’s most influential thinkers — including writers, architects, scientists, and artists — shared a willingness to question the unknown. Encouraging students to push beyond conventional thinking, Trump said creators must remain “stubbornly curious,” urging them to think outside the box and challenge assumptions in order to move ideas forward.
Trump also highlighted how artificial intelligence has expanded the range of tools available to aspiring creators. Students today, she said, can develop entire creative ecosystems using AI, including characters, scripts, fashion designs, music, and visual art. Yet she argued that the true value of these tools depends on how individuals apply them.

At the same time, Trump cautioned against relying on artificial intelligence as a substitute for human thought. “Although artificial intelligence can generate images and information, only humans can generate meaning and purpose,” she said. Emphasizing the role of deep thinking and patience, she told students that purpose begins with curiosity and thoughtful reflection rather than quick technological solutions.
Closing her remarks, the First Lady delivered a direct message about the importance of maintaining intellectual independence in a rapidly changing technological landscape. “Today I urge you to take action. Use AI to unlock new parts of your imagination. Lead with your ideas. Stay sharp. But remember, never surrender your thinking to AI,” she said. “Choose to let your imagination drive your intellectual progress, but never use AI as a quick solution. Be intellectually honest with yourself. Use AI as a tool, but do not let it replace your personal intelligence. Knowledge is power. Nobody can take it away from you.”
