Clinton Says Trump Has Turned the White House Into “Rubble and a Cage Match” After UFC Cage Construction Begins on South Lawn

WASHINGTON, May 29, 2026 — Hillary Clinton fired at President Donald Trump on Thursday after photos of the White House South Lawn showed a massive UFC octagon cage under construction alongside ongoing renovation work, posting that Trump had turned “the people’s house” into rubble and a cage match — and calling it a fitting metaphor for his presidency.

“This is what Trump’s done to the people’s house: A third of it is rubble. Another third is a cage match. What a metaphor,” Clinton wrote on X, alongside a photo of the South Lawn showing construction equipment and the rising UFC arena structure. She turned off replies on the post.

What’s Actually on the South Lawn

Clinton’s post referenced two simultaneous projects transforming the White House grounds. The first is ongoing renovation and construction work on the South Lawn, which has been underway for several months and has left portions of the grounds visibly disrupted — cranes, construction equipment, and torn-up turf visible to tourists and TV cameras stationed outside the complex’s perimeter fence.

The second is the UFC Freedom 250 arena — a temporary octagon-shaped cage being erected for a historic mixed martial arts event scheduled for June 14, 2026, timed to coincide with both America’s 250th anniversary celebrations and Trump’s 80th birthday. The arena, dubbed “The Claw” by UFC president Dana White, features a red, white and blue stage under a towering arch with stars-and-stripes patterns and two large screens broadcasting the action live.

It sits on a stretch of South Lawn grounds traditionally used for Marine One departures and the annual Easter egg roll. Trump has said the finished project will seat 5,000 spectators “right outside the front door of the White House,” with an additional 85,000 free tickets available for a fan zone at the Ellipse. White has confirmed that fighters will walk to the octagon directly from the Oval Office, and weigh-ins will be held at the Lincoln Memorial.

The Fight Card

The UFC Freedom 250 event will be simulcast on CBS and Paramount+, with White predicting it will be “the most-watched UFC event ever.” The fight card features Ilia Topuria defending his lightweight title against Justin Gaethje in the main event, and Alex Pereira taking on Ciryl Gane for the interim heavyweight title in the co-main event. Replacing the White House lawn grass after the event is expected to cost approximately $700,000, according to White — a cost the UFC has indicated it will cover.

UFC chief content officer Craig Borsari, who oversaw the $20 million Noche UFC production at the Las Vegas Sphere in 2024, has met with White House operations staff more than ten times to plan the production, according to White. The event will represent the UFC’s third visit to Washington, D.C., and its first since December 2019. It is the first live professional sporting event ever staged on the South Lawn of the White House.

Security and Logistical Concerns

The event has not been without controversy beyond Clinton’s jab. Joe Rogan, a longtime UFC commentator and Trump supporter, warned publicly that staging a large-scale event at the White House poses serious security and logistical challenges. “This is a one in one, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” — but also one with unusual complexity, Rogan said, questioning how crowd flow, security perimeters, and emergency access would be managed with 85,000 people on the Ellipse and 5,000 more on the South Lawn.

The U.S. Secret Service has not publicly addressed the specific security arrangements for the event. Dana White has said the UFC’s matchmaking and production teams have been in close coordination with White House staff, and that the logistics — including which direction the sun will hit the octagon at various points during the fight card — have been mapped down to individual trees on the South Lawn.

Clinton’s Metaphor

Clinton’s post was a two-sentence jab at the visual symbolism of construction chaos and an MMA cage occupying the same grounds where presidents have historically received foreign dignitaries, held state ceremonies, and conducted the business of the executive branch. Clinton lived in the White House from 1993 to 2001 as First Lady and later served as Secretary of State from 2009 to 2013, giving her a personal familiarity with the institution she was criticizing.

The broader backdrop of Clinton’s “metaphor” line reflects a sustained Democratic critique that Trump has blurred the line between the presidency and personal spectacle — a critique that has intensified alongside reports of Trump trading hundreds of millions in stocks in companies his administration regulates, a federal judge ordering his name removed from the Kennedy Center, and the use of White House events to promote Trump Organization merchandise including $55 “USA 250 Anniversary” hats displayed at a Cabinet meeting.

Dana White’s Role

UFC CEO Dana White is a longtime Trump ally and campaign supporter who helped introduce Trump at the Republican National Convention in 2024. He first announced the White House fight was “on” in August 2025 following a direct meeting with Trump at the White House. White has described the event as “a one in one, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that will never happen again” and has been coordinating logistics with White House operations staff for months. White House officials have confirmed the event to reporters and it remains on schedule for June 14.

Whether Clinton’s “rubble and a cage match” will become the defining image of the White House’s America 250 moment remains to be seen. Construction on both fronts — the South Lawn renovations and “The Claw” — continues ahead of the June 14 fight night.
