Billion-Dollar AI Startup CEO Says — “If You’re a Brainrotted, Terminally Online Person, That Might Be an Advantage Because You Know What’s Happening in the World”

Amjad Masad, CEO of the $3 billion AI-powered coding platform Replit, recently discussed how traits once seen as vices can now offer unique advantages in the AI era. Speaking with Jack Neel, Masad argued that being highly active online and deeply attuned to digital trends provides a critical edge for aspiring entrepreneurs and developers looking to harness AI tools for rapid innovation.

Masad emphasized that idea generation is becoming the core skill in technology today, especially as the cost and time to implement software ideas plummet. “If you’re brain rotted, terminally online person, that might be advantage because you know what’s happening in the world,” he said, highlighting the value of cultural awareness and trend tracking in identifying opportunities. He added that success increasingly depends on being able to spot problems, understand markets, and act quickly rather than mastering traditional coding skills.

Replit, founded in 2016 by Masad, his brother Faris, and designer Haya Odeh, is a browser-based software development platform that enables anyone to write, run, collaborate on, and deploy code without local installations. Its AI-powered tools allow users to create applications from natural-language prompts, effectively automating coding for both beginners and professional developers. Masad pointed out that the platform’s capabilities mean that even those without coding experience can rapidly turn ideas into functional software.

In the interview, Masad shared examples of users leveraging Replit to build valuable applications quickly. One finance professional reportedly used Replit to automate tasks for investment banking clients, securing a $500,000 letter of intent after pitching a concept developed in a single night. Another educator experimented with AI-assisted coding to streamline student grading and assignment creation, turning the project into a company now valued at hundreds of millions in revenue. “It’s the easiest time to get rich in the history of capitalism. But certainly in the history of the internet,” Masad said.

Masad also framed AI-driven innovation as a shift in the qualities that produce success. While traditional coders may focus on technical precision, those who are fast learners, curious about novelty, and plugged into online trends are positioned to generate ideas, iterate quickly, and reach users faster. According to Masad, this dynamic is changing the entrepreneurial landscape: being highly engaged online, often seen as “brainrot,” can serve as a signal of awareness and adaptability in a rapidly evolving digital world.

Replit’s recent funding rounds, including a $250 million round in September 2025, reflect its growing influence in democratizing software development and accelerating the creation of AI-powered applications. The platform serves millions of users globally, providing a collaborative environment for coding and idea testing entirely in the cloud. Masad’s comments underscore the ways AI and online engagement are reshaping who can succeed in technology today, transforming previously dismissed traits into powerful advantages.
