FBI Director Kash Patel Confirms Investigation into Deaths and Disappearances of Nearly a Dozen Scientists with Classified Ties

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed on Sunday that the FBI has launched a major, coordinated investigation into the mysterious deaths and disappearances of nearly a dozen U.S. scientists with ties to top-secret national security programs.

Appearing on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo on April 19, 2026, Patel said the FBI is centralizing information from multiple jurisdictions to determine whether the cases are connected, particularly through access to classified material or involvement of foreign actors.

“These missing and killed scientists and former professional members of the Department of Energy vary in wide range,” Patel stated. “We’re working most importantly with our state and local partners who have the jurisdiction on each of these cases, whether they be a homicide or a missing person’s case; they have the evidence.”

“What we’re going to do is collectively pull it all into one place,” he continued. “We started this process last week, and then we’re going to look for connections… on whether there are connections to classified access, access to classified information and or foreign actors, and then we will produce that information to the White House and the world because it’s of such great public importance.”

Patel added that if evidence points to “nefarious conduct or conspiracy,” the FBI will make the appropriate arrests.

The comments come days after President Trump was briefed on the matter and following White House statements that “no stone will be unturned” in reviewing the cases.

Scope of the Investigation

The cases involve scientists and former Department of Energy professionals with expertise in sensitive areas, including nuclear, aerospace, space, and advanced defense technologies. While the exact number cited varies slightly across reports — with Patel referencing nearly a dozen — the incidents include both deaths and unexplained disappearances, some dating back to 2023 and others occurring more recently.

Patel emphasized collaboration with state and local law enforcement, noting that many cases initially fall under local jurisdiction. The FBI’s role is to conduct a “link analysis,” searching for patterns, shared classified access, or potential foreign involvement.

This coordinated review builds on earlier White House and FBI statements that the administration is examining potential commonalities among the cases.

Broader Context

The confirmation from Director Patel marks a significant escalation in federal attention to the issue, which has drawn concern within the scientific and national security communities. Speculation about possible espionage or other coordinated threats has circulated, though no official connections have been confirmed.

Patel’s appearance also addressed other topics, including China’s cyberattacks and his plans to file a defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic over a recent story, but he devoted substantial time to the scientists’ cases.

The FBI has pledged transparency, with Patel stating the agency intends to share findings with the White House and the public due to the “great public importance” of the matter.

Updates are expected as the centralized review progresses.
