The Netherlands has approved Tesla’s Full Self-Driving Supervised system, becoming the first European country to do so.
The Dutch vehicle authority RDW granted type approval for Tesla’s FSD Supervised on April 10, 2026. The system will begin rolling out to Tesla vehicles in the Netherlands shortly via over-the-air software update.
RDW emphasized that FSD Supervised is an advanced driver assistance system, **not** a self-driving or autonomous vehicle. The driver remains fully responsible and must stay attentive at all times. The system uses in-cabin cameras to monitor the driver’s eyes and readiness to take control, issuing warnings if attention wanes and disabling itself if the driver is consistently inattentive.
The approval followed more than 18 months of extensive testing on both closed tracks and public roads. Safety was RDW’s top priority throughout the review process, the authority stated in its official explanation.
The type approval is currently valid only in the Netherlands under a provisional European framework. To expand use across the entire European Union, RDW must submit an application to the European Commission, followed by a vote among member states.
Tesla Europe confirmed the approval, stating that FSD Supervised “can drive you almost anywhere under your supervision – from residential roads to city streets and highways” and that rollout will begin shortly. The company added it is “excited to bring FSD Supervised to more European countries soon,” according to its official announcement.

RDW noted that many other vehicles already have advanced driver assistance systems. Previous approvals have been granted to manufacturers such as BMW and Ford for specific highway scenarios. Tesla’s approval is described as broader in scope but still requires constant driver supervision.
The regulator highlighted that European approval processes differ significantly from those in the United States, with stricter upfront safety and environmental requirements in the EU.
Elon Musk responded to the announcement by noting that RDW’s review was “extremely rigorous,” linking directly to the official RDW statement.
