Drivers Welcome End of Automatic Stop-Start Feature in Vehicles

The Trump administration has eliminated federal incentives that encouraged widespread use of automatic stop-start technology in new vehicles, a feature many drivers have found irritating.

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin announced the change on February 12, 2026, as part of a broader action repealing the 2009 Obama-era Greenhouse Gas Endangerment Finding and associated vehicle emission standards. The move removes off-cycle credits that automakers could earn for installing stop-start systems, which temporarily shut off the engine when the vehicle is idling at a stop, according to an EPA news release.

The official White House account on X marked the decision with a post stating: “Keeping cool while Making America Hot Again. Auto start-stop is officially dead.” The post included a meme video contrasting a stationary Prius-style vehicle with occupants appearing uncomfortable and a sports car driving away.

Automatic stop-start technology was tracked by the EPA beginning with 2012 model year vehicles, when it appeared in less than 1 percent of new gasoline non-hybrid cars. Adoption increased significantly with federal greenhouse gas regulations. By recent model years, the production share of gasoline non-hybrid stop-start systems had risen substantially, according to the 2024 EPA Automotive Trends Report.

The technology is designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by cutting the engine when the brake is applied and restarting it when the driver releases the brake. Studies have shown fuel economy improvements ranging from about 7 percent to as much as 26 percent, depending on driving conditions such as the amount of idle time, Consumer Reports noted, citing testing that aligned with findings from Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Many drivers have criticized the system for causing a jerky or unnatural driving feel, along with noticeable vibration and a brief delay when the engine restarts. Some owners have reported turning off the feature every time they drive, using sport mode, or installing aftermarket devices to disable it permanently.

Mike Donio of Woolwich Township, New Jersey, described his first encounter with the technology in his 2020 Audi A4 as startling. “I searched frantically for the button to shut it off,” he said. He has kept it disabled since, often by shifting into sport or manual mode.

Alek Komarnitsky, 62, of Boulder, Colorado, said the feature in his 2024 Subaru Outback produces noticeable noise and vibration. His brother, Kurt Komarnitsky, 60, of Fall City, Washington, who drives a 2022 Outback, added that the restart delay feels longer than it is, particularly when making left turns.

Antonio Fernandez of North Canton, Ohio, expressed similar frustration with the restart in his 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee, saying it affects handling at green lights.

Not all drivers oppose the technology. Some have noted fuel savings, with one Reddit user commenting that it “saves you money” and questioning why it would be turned off.

Donio, who also owns a fully electric Hyundai Ioniq 5, said he appreciates the absence of a combustion engine that needs to stop and restart. He continues to drive his Audi despite the feature.

The EPA action does not ban stop-start systems outright. Automakers may still install them, but they will no longer receive regulatory credits toward greenhouse gas compliance. Zeldin described the credit as tied to a feature that many Americans disliked.

The decision forms part of a larger regulatory rollback that the administration has called the single largest deregulatory action in U.S. history.

Environmental advocates have raised concerns that repealing the endangerment finding and related standards could lead to higher emissions over time. The administration has stated the changes restore consumer choice and reduce vehicle costs.

Some drivers have turned to workarounds such as the Autostop Eliminator device, priced around $100 for certain models, to disable the feature without manual intervention each time.

The stop-start debate reflects broader discussions about the balance between fuel efficiency gains and real-world driving experience in modern vehicles.
