“Living on the Edge of Innovation Can Look Like Brainrot,” — Replit CEO Amjad Masad Says — “Many Successful AI Entrepreneurs I Talk to Have an Unusually Deep Understanding of What’s Happening Online Right Now”

Amjad Masad, CEO of the $3 billion AI-powered coding platform Replit, recently discussed how staying deeply engaged with online culture and trends is becoming a crucial advantage for modern entrepreneurs. In a post on X, Masad drew parallels between the qualities of successful programmers and the traits now required to thrive in the AI era, emphasizing that what once looked like distraction or “brainrot” can be a signal of opportunity.

Masad referenced Larry Wall, the inventor of the Perl programming language, who identified three key virtues of programmers: laziness, impatience, and hubris. “Laziness drives programmers to automate away boring work. Impatience makes them do things quickly. Hubris gives them the self-belief to attempt ambitious things,” Masad wrote. He noted that these virtues, once primarily associated with coders, now extend to entrepreneurs leveraging AI tools to rapidly test and implement ideas.

Replit, founded in 2016 by Masad, is a browser-based software development platform that allows users to write, run, and deploy code entirely in the cloud. Its AI-powered agents can generate full applications from natural-language prompts, drastically reducing the time and cost required to bring software ideas to life. His company, now valued at roughly 3 billion has gained much attention as Masad encourages others to innovate as he did.

Masad emphasized the importance of being attuned to online culture as a source of insights and product ideas. “Many successful AI entrepreneurs I talk to have an unusually deep understanding of what’s happening online right now. They watch conversations, communities, memes, and behaviors. They’re constantly monitoring the situation,” he wrote. He argued that observing trends, even those that seem unserious or trivial, allows entrepreneurs to identify emerging opportunities before others notice them.

He also discussed how traits often seen as vices, such as ADHD or a restless curiosity, can be strengths in the AI-driven economy. “Most of the time, it looks like a distraction. But if your job is to discover opportunities in the chaos of the internet and manage 10 different agents trying out new ideas, it starts to look less like a bug and more like a feature,” Masad explained. He suggested that the AI era rewards those who can combine creativity, rapid experimentation, and cultural awareness to discover what people care about and build solutions quickly.

Replit’s recent growth reflects the platform’s impact on democratizing software development. With hundreds of millions raised in multiple funding rounds, Replit serves millions of users worldwide. Its AI capabilities allow both beginners and professional developers to build, test, and share software at unprecedented speed. Masad’s observations highlight how the traits that once defined successful programmers now apply broadly, and that being plugged into online trends can transform what appears to be “brainrot” into a strategic advantage for innovation in the AI era.
